National Association of Cannabis Pharmacy (NACP) Announces the Inaugural Cannabis Pharmaceutical Scientific & Medical Congress
Alexandria, VA., June 11, 2014 – The National Association of Cannabis Pharmacy (NACP) announces the Inaugural launch of the Cannabis Pharmaceutical Scientific & Medical Congress in Arlington, Virginia, October 27 – 29, 2014.
NACP will hold a two-day scientific congress, where subject matter experts, key opinion leaders, and regulators will present data to challenge or support the past, current and future ramifications of cannabis as a Schedule I narcotic.
The conference hosts will invite leading scientific, medical, and legal experts to present a body of evidence either in support or against the rescheduling of cannabis for scientific research. “This program may be able to help to settle the long term national debate on the value of cannabis-based medicines and the future of the endocannabinoid system,” Gary M. Cohen, BSPharm, RPh, CSP, NACP Board Member, said.
The newly-formed NACP supports scientifically conducted clinical studies as a way to establish safety for cannabis-based products in the burgeoning industry known to the public as “medical marijuana,” or as NACP prefers to say “cannabis-based medicines” or “CBMs.”
Among the safety-oriented statements in the association’s website; “We believe medical treatment that is evidence-based and determined by professional standards of care offers the best protection of public health. Consumers should have the right to access cannabis-based medicines (CBMs) that are prescribed by physicians and dispensed by pharmacists for appropriate use.”
Currently, most healthcare professionals are not permitted to prescribe or dispense marijuana, even for medical purposes, leaving dispensing of cannabis products to caregivers in the 22 states and the District of Columbia which have enacted laws to legalize its medical use.
“Our goal is to collaborate with scientists and researchers in the therapeutic categories where cannabis-based products are showing promise while at the same time helping to shape public policy in this area,” Cohen said. “By hosting this event in the metro-Washington D.C. area, we aim to attract key opinion leaders from Capital Hill and the regulatory agencies for a rich discussion of the issues,” Cohen said.
